's not what you're look at. mitt romney was just talking the jargon of someone who does private equity and it's just not -- at the same time, though, in the last year he's told us that he can create jobs and knows the economy better because of his bain cap pal experience. >> but michelle, let me ask you, harvest companies -- buy companies and harvest them, where can you even find the most generous stretch you can, find job creation? >> it is unfortunate imagery and it's a rarafied field and this is the downside to the way romney has made his entire campaign, kind of a referendum on obama' private sector experience, he talks up a good game, you know, kind of inflating what any president would be able to do on the job creation front. so, you know, you run across something like this and of course people are going to jump on it because romney himself has made job creation and his ability to do that central to his entire candidacy. >> but, david, let's be fair. he does care. he, romney, has some compassion in an interview with nbc, he showed how he cared by promoting romney care. look at this. >>
and stands by them today. good debate talk tomorrow night. mitt romney says he's going to repeal obama care and replace it with something to keep people from being uninsured. but an analysis from the commonwealth fund shows mitt romney would leave 72 million more people uninsured, 12 million higher than before obama care. rece recently mitt romney said his campaign never ran any intentionally false advertising. we have been ab chutely spot-on, he said. any time there's anything that's been a miss we correct it or remove it. i kind of talk like romney, don't i? this is coming from a guy whose first campaign ad against barack obama presented a quote about john mccain and pretended that president obama was saying it about himself. they defended the ad as honest. romney is running on his business create. he says he created 100,000 jobs as the ce ork as bain. he claimed he had no involvement with managing bain after 1999. but wait a minute. sec filings show him as the ceo and sole stake holder in the company for three additional years. now during those years, what happened? thousands of people w
on but if you talk to romney people in private, and they have been quoted in background pieces in the last few days, they'll say look, we're losing, this is a good chance to change the dynamic so he needs to step up. >> charles blow, how does he step up? because there is this conundrum. he's not very likeable to the electorate from all the polls, even today, obama is way ahead on likability. he doesn't have that ready reagan kind of charm. but he's got to exude some of that, i think, at the same time he's got to beat up barack obama verbally so that everyone goes away thinking romney won. how does he do both? >> well, i don't know how he does both. i don't believe he's capable of doing both. i do think you're right to put it in two parts which is one, he has to dig himself out of the hole that he has put himself in. with the gaffes and the kind of robotic nature and all that. the second thing he has to do to stand next to a sitting president of the united states and say i am an attractive alternative to this. what you have to look at this is like this is the last round of interviews. we alread
with you, ross. romney's got it all to play for, good and bad, depending on who you talk to. this is make or break time in a good or bad way. chris christie believes and i will quote here, i've seen mitt romney do this before. he's going to come in, he's going to lay out his vision for america, contrast his view with the president's record and it's going to be the president's views for the future. this whole race is going to be turned upside down come thursday morning. boom. job done. >> that's why people love chris christie. because he tells something at least vaguely approaching the truth which is that whether or not romney actually succeeds in pulling something like that off, that's close to what he needs right now. if you listen to what paul ryan says in public and interviews and what romney surrogates say, they'll downplay expectations and say obama's a great orator and so on but if you talk to romney people in private, and they have been quoted in background pieces in the last few days, they'll say look, we're losing, this is a good chance to change the dynamic so he needs to step u
this morning, and nearly that in another recent poll. after that video of romney talking disparagingly about the 47% who pay no income tax. today, from romney, more compassion in a new minute-long tv ad. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle class families. the difference is, my policies will make things better for them. >> reporter: romney's problem is historic, no republican has won the white house without winning ohio, romney sounded optimistic today in an interview with nbc news. >> can you win ohio? >> i'm going to win ohio, in part because i have support from people in ohio >> reporter: but the problem, obama is here, too, today, his 29th visit since taking office, and not letting anybody forget that other number, 47%. >> i don't believe we get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as victims who never take responsibility for their lives. >> reporter: the president stopped at campuses, rallying young supporters. such a crucial day, both men took the stage at almost the same time this afternoon, and almost crossed paths as president obama headed to kent

[ applause ] >> the people that are out there fighting these wars, we owe them support forever and i think governor romney is totally supportive of that. >> reporter: but that's not the opinion of veteran jim dillard who represented springfield for 30 years in the virginia house of del
, it is unbelievable that now governor romney talks about immigrants with derogatory terms like "legals," yet he profited from the funding that actually cause much of the immigration to the u.s. from el salvador. >> mitt romney talks about people should self the port. >> i think ross south america, nicaragua, el salvador, honduras, has always been a small elite that has benefited from bain a group basically facilitating the exploitation of their own countries by american businesses. i think that romney was so closely tied to some of the salvadoran compradors that is really astounding in terms of his stance on immigration. and in the film, they have one of the most powerful portions of the film where it is the testimony of one of the salvadoran torture victims who became an immigrant or refugee here in the united states. she talks in vivid terms about the kinds of torture that she went through and somehow managed to survive. i think that romney got his start in bain through his investment by some of these salvadorian elites is really telling in itself. >> i want to get your comment on the current
where hard work pays off. >>> romney talked about national security in springfield, virginia. he said the world is a dangerous place and president obama is not doing enough to protect the american people. >> i'm concerned about the direction america is headed. the white house proposed a sequestration, kind of a gun to your head opportunity which is if congress couldn't get the job done and president couldn't lead them, they would make devastating cuts to the military. >> the two face off next monday in the first presidential debate. >>> another candidate will be campaigning in the bay area tonight. roseanne barr. she will be talking about the political future of medical marijuana during a town hall meeting at oaksterdam university in oakland. federal agents raided oaksterdam in april. it's one of many dispensaries targeted in a crackdown launched by the obama administration. also in attendance, cindy sheehan, barra's opponent. >>> a chain-link fence now surrounds this former occupy movement site. >>> it's -- it's getting warmer in the bay area. >>> and a man thought it would be furney
to get america moving again. that is what romney talks about. when sigh him do that, i feel pretty good about because i think he is on the right path. you may not hear it through the mega phone of national media and he should do it more. >> paul: i paid attention to your race in 2010. you ran against a candidate ted strickland very much like the president is, tried to associate with you wall street and big banks. you beat him. how can mitt romney beat a campaign like that in ohio? >> he's got to be here paul. he was in high hometown not long ago. he had an overflow crowd that was amazing. i've been around a lot of national campaigns. when you are out with him. you see the enthusiasm. look the most important thing for candidate running for president is to get people to understand that he understands their problems or she understands their problems and knows how to fix them. jim roads the fourth term governor of ohio, all that matters in ohio is the size of this wallet. sf it's getting fatter, they will do well. if it is small are, they will not do well. romney needs to make the case so p

: the campaigns have been focused on lowering their debate. mitt romney is talking up the president's victorious record from 2008. president obama's campaign said the president is out of practice compared to romney, referring to the gop primary debates. the one guy who didn't get the memo, new jersey governor chris christie. he hit the sunday morning talk shows, playing up the expectations for mitt romney. >> here's the great news for republicans. we have lap candidate who will do extraordinarily well. he will come am wednesday night, lay out his vision for america, contrast his view and the president's record and this whole race will be turned upside down come thursday morning. >> reporter: this unfiltered confidence may not make much of a splash. a newark ton post poll shows 55% of likely voters think the president will win this debate. only 31% say it will be romney. new this is a poll president obama likely does not want to win because he essentially says mitt romney is the underdog going into the debate. >> kelly? >> i don't think i've seen a gap that huge in one of the polls. the national

governor romney talking about he don't need those people and the last time i checked we were we the people. and that's who the president is fighting for. we the people in eye yoe, we the people in wisconsin, we the people all across this country. governor romney has revealed exactly who he is and we've got to believe that he doesn't care about the 47% in this nation. >> watching the romney-ryan romance come apart in such an ugly way, the stench. i mean, here's another quote from politico. after paul ryan showed a powerpoint presentation to a crowd in orlando on saturday. the romney campaign was furious but ryan reportedly said let the ryan be ryan and let the stench be the stench. >> he didn't really say that, did he? >> the politico, they have people in the field. >> first of all, i will have you know there's nothing that fires up a crowd like a good powerpoint presentation. so kudos to paul ryan. it's kind of funny that mitt romney wouldn't embrace the powerpoint more. since in massachusetts he was the powerpoint guy and brought out the white board to do the medicare solvent under me whi
john elway. it was the only scheduled talk. it was a stealth bomber in the background there. romney tried to tamp down expectations in the back. >> people want to know who is going to win? who is going to score the punches and who is going to make the biggest difference in the arguments they make? in my view, it's not so much winning or losing or even the people themselves. it's about something bigger than that. these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. >> playing off the enthusiastic crowd. romney had lines for the base. may even tested out a few zingers we might hear wednesday night. >> this is a home to focus on the family which is committed to preserving the foundation of america. we have to get the pipe laine from canada if i have to build it myself. >> it will kill america's entrepreneurship. >> that's the first time, by the way, romney talked about card check on the stump since the primaries. others call it the employee free choice act. it was a priority four years ago. it never passed because a few democ

a talking point's memo from the campaign to romney's surrogates and allies it was leaked today. i know from experience that a memo coming like this just two days before a debate it is intended to prepare the surrogates and allies to parrot really the candidate to repeat and reinforce his position on every issue. so you are ready to hear it and it makes his ability to defend at the debate that much so that's what this memo is all about. wednesday's debate is going to focus on three of the most contentious issues of the campaign. the focus will be on the role of government, the economy and health care. mitt romney has a history of shall we sa waffling a little bit on these important issues we even have a collection of mitt's flip flops here inside the war room but this suggests where his position is actually going to be on wednesday night. first off, the role of government as a subject, and that really gets fundamentally to the issue of taxes, at least for mitt romney. the romney memo says that mitt romney will not raise taxes on anyone and that he will deliver
for the past four years and how mitt romney can talk straight to the american people about how he has a plan to create jobs, specific things, like in my home state of virginia, he's going to allow us to have exploration off shore with energy so we can have good high-paying jobs. that's something supported by democrat senators like mark warner and jim webb in my home state of virginia and something this president has stopped. we're also going to get rid of those job-killing regulations that killed 1,200 jobs in the coal fields of virginia and west virginia and elsewhere. and we're also going to cut taxes on small businesses. cut taxes across the board of a -- across the board tax cut instead of the promise that barack obama is going to increase taxes across the board of the biggest tax increase in history on january 1st. and mitt romney understands that you have to have small business to grow these jobs. and that's the way we're going to invest in small businesses. take the job-killing obamacare regulations that will crush small businesses, but then give -- replace it with good policies that
